I hope the 'Verified Purchase' flag shows that I purchased this book. Not only did I buy this wonderful book, but I actually read it before writing this review. This is a great book. Yevgeniy starts with anecdotes that describe the stark differences between how purchasing / deploying/ testing/ maintaining 'physical infrastructure' differs from today's cloud infrastructure. The book's first section answers the questions 'why should I read this' as well as 'is this author's experience purely theoretical or did he earn his scars on the front line'. The author is very experienced with DevOps and is well-respected within the tight knit DevOps community. I found particular value in his discussion of how Gruntwork (a DevOps-as-a-Service startup he co-founded) went about selecting an 'infrastructure as code' deployment tool. He compared and contrasted: Chef, Puppet, Ansible, CloudFormation, SaltStack, and of course Terraform. The author helped me understand some terms I'd never heard before: like idempotent. He defined other words (I'd heard before just not) in the context of comparing 'infrastructure as code' tools: like immutable declarative vs. mutable procedural. If this is beginning to sound dry - quite the opposite is true - it was fascinating and informative. I was struck by how evenhandedly he treated all the vendors/tools. Ansible & Chef are wonderful tools. He was upfront with the drawbacks of the Terraform platform and its young community. However, his reasoning for choosing Terraform was incredibly persuasive: 1. due in no small part to his experience and 2. why would anyone want to be responsible for telling their infrastructure-as-code tool 'how' to achieve some desired end state versus defining that desired end state and allow the tool to determine the most efficient way to achieve it. The remainder of the book teaches best practices (including setting-up git repositories) and the syntax for accomplishing 99% of what Terraform can do today. I created a CentOS 7 VM on my Mac where I first installed the AWSCLI and then Terraform. For those that don't have that option or would rather take a shortcut - I suggest launching an EC2 instance using Amazo's Linux AMI (AWSCLI is ready to use) (plus you can assign a security role granting AWSCLI permission to perform the Terraform activities - preventing you from having to hardcode your AWS credentials). I followed right along with every exercise/lab Yevgeniy performed. I was impressed with how intuitive most my personal syntax errors were to correct. Now let me speak a little about Terraform. Wow! There's a fascinating YouTube video 'Applying Graph Theory to Infrastructure as Code' that explains that the Terraform's underpinnings are based in 'Graph Theory' mathematics. I firmly believe that Hashicorp's success is a mixture of visionary leaders and this applied math foundation ( a perfect analog for creating, modifying today's cloud infrastructure ). One final anecdote: Amazon Partner Network (APN) Consulting partners - companies that have invested in the people & tools & training to earn AWS' seal of approval - almost exclusively use Terraform.

I've been studying Terraform off and on for about a month now. I devoured the Terraform documentation and countless blog posts for how to do things beyond the trivial "hello world" type examples. Last night I discovered the blog post series that inspired this book, and I realized how valuable the information was for me. I decided to buy the ebook as a sign of gratitude for how various concepts were so clearly explained using well-written examples.This book definitely shares a lot (if not all) of the content included in the blog posts, but it does go into more detail. It's clear that the book has been reviewed by skilled and knowledgeable individuals. All of the information in the book made sense to me. In several places, alternative approaches to one thing or another are discussed. The recommendations for best practices were exactly what I was looking for when I purchased this book. I do not regret a thing.The book is short. I'm a slow reader, and I finished it within a few hours while following along with many of the examples. Upon reaching the appendix, I immediately came here to write this review. I'm excited to dig into Terraform some more and apply the concepts I learned from this book.One downside to this book (and the industry as a whole) is that it was only published a week or so ago, and it's already outdated. Terraform 0.9 was released a week before this book was finally published. This new version includes improvements around remote state management and environment-based state. Unfortunately, the book has no way to cover this brand new information, and the suggested tool for helping with remote state management is not compatible with Terraform 0.9 (yet). I would love to see an update to this book that includes advice for leveraging the new remote state management and environment-based state functionality.

I bought this book because I really enjoyed this author's first book (Hello, Startup) and thought I would give this book a read as well.Terraform is a infrastructure as code tool for provisioning cloud servers. It is a declarative language where you state what resources you want, how you want them configured, and the tool figures out how to create it.An excellent job was done introducing Terraform and explaining the competing tools. There are comparisons to Chef, Ansible, CloudFormation, and a few others. This helped give a broad overview of the field and how Terraform compares.Examples in the book connect to AWS resources and it is explained how the tool can also connect to Azure and Google Cloud. Best practices are mentioned often throughout the book. Terraform is a young project and is still evolving. There are relevant links scattered throughout the book for where to find more information.This is a concise book in that it is roughly 160 pages, and I think it worked well for this subject. This author has a gift for writing about complex technical subjects in a logical and interesting way.

A little out of date at this point (I believe the book uses Terraform 0.8.3, but as of 12/2/2017, Terraform is now 0.11.1), but this book hits home on many of the really big topics. For anyone interested in getting started with Terraform, this book plus the official Terraform registry will allow you to build out your cloud infrastructure easily and quickly. I finished our cloud deployment over the course of a week, with several EC2 instances, load balancers, multi-AZ replicated RDS, and a bunch of other goodies - thanks mostly to this book. The author is absolutely an authority on Terraform.

 DRIVE, the latest book from Design Studio Press is a collaborative effort between Scott Robertson and two of his students at the Art Center College of Design: Annis Naeem and Daniel Gardner. It's a great idea to have an art book as a portfolio.This book is about cool cars and awesome rigs. It's a 176-page hardcover with a very nice cover.The pages are just loaded with concept sketches, paintings and 3D models. Four basic vehicle types are featured as chapters, namely Aerospace, Military, Pro Sport and Salvage. Within each chapter, you'll see fast cars, off-roaders, juggernaut-type vehicles, a few bikes, and other sleek mean machines. This book is a valuable resource for ideas with its immense variety. There are so many ways you can design chassis, wheels, suspension, exhaust, etc.The concepts are good looking, inspiring and sometimes surprising -- the first vehicle looked like a frog. Through the multiple thumbnail sketches provided, you can see how the design evolved at different stages until it's finally painted or modeled in 3D.Speaking of 3D models, they are impressive. And there are lots of them in the book. Tremendous amount of detail are included in the models, before they are textured, lit and finally rendered in a photo-realistic manner. It's amazing to see the vehicle when everything is put together, with all the cuttings, wirings and parts. The result is a vehicle that looks believable and like it has character.Artist commentary is also available throughout to give a sense of what they have to work with and how they think.DRIVE is a book I'll recommend to anyone who likes concept vehicles.-(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. For those who don't know about Scott Robertson, he's a vehicle concept artist for the entertainment industry who's been an instructor at Art Center in Pasadena and Gnomon School of VFX in Hollywood. He's produced countless DVD training video's on the topic of automotive design for Gnomon Workshops aswell as his own imprint.I've read the reviews and critiques of Scott Robertson's other books and would have to agree with allot of them. This book however seems to have addressed those comments and in my opinion is the best of his releases. It's broken up to cover different types of designs from military vehicles to future racing cars. It includes everything from large full color 3d renderings to greyscale photoshop work, to early concept sketches and iterations of the conceptual process of his vehicular designs. Most of the book is full color, large images taking up the majority of the page or a double page spread. Some of the greyscale concepts might be 2 or 3 to 6 up on a page depending.Personally, I love cars and vehicle concept art, I find this book to be a continual source of continuing inspiration. After many hours of studying this book, elements of the different vehicles depicted through out this book have begun to seep into my own work. When I'm hung up on a design, I pull out this book to help jumpstart my own imagination or to simply help me find other alternatives to what I'm trying to accomplish.It's probably one of the few books I never get tired of looking through and it spends more time on my desk or in my bag then on the bookshelf. If your into vehicle designs and concepts this is defiantly something I'd think you'd want to have handy to get the creative juices flowing... seriously, I just can't express amazing I find this book to be.

I consider myself a passable draftsman and while I'm still improving my rendering skills, I feel as though my work is good enough to pass in everyday situations. Scott Robertson makes me feel like I never got any better at drawing past kindergarten-level crayon house drawings. His work is phenomenal and DRIVE is a great catalog of some of his obsessively artistic ability.If you follow him on YouTube, you can see him preparing for both DRIVE and LIFT OFF as well as a number of other books in his Free Tutorial Fridays. To see the process and then to see the final result in each case is pretty incredible. He makes drawing and rendering look easy to the maximum degree and neither are.

Very high quality book with equally high quality renderings of some fantastical vehicles. Even if you aren't in to vehicles (I am in to space ships) this book is such a pleasure to spark your own imagination. I wish they had more defined sections like civilian vehicles and then military. The military vehicles could have been expanded upon more IMO. Great buy if you love imaginative sic-fi works.

If you like the idea of future racers, large engines and superb designs, this book is for you. I got this book as inspiration for a racing game I am working on and it does not disappoint, the art is stunning, well designed and exciting.

All in all, a nice book to have in your book shell. The quality and interest in the content/designs is not even through the book. Also some designs, after a while, tends to look very similar. I think is good to have it for inspiration, and/or reference, but i have mixed feelings about this book...i can't avoid the feeling that there is a good 25% of the content that is just for filling the volume. Maybe for $15 i wouldnt complain, but for this range price (and less) i've got a lot more polished books with excellent content from start to finish (see my other reviews to know about them if you are curious). But well Scott Robertson is a master of his craft, and he gives you a lot of insights about his procedures that can be very usefull and that are great for demystify concept design . I think he is very honest about that, and he tries to help the aspiring designer to realize how things work from ideation sketches to polisged renderings.

Good illustrations. If you are into cars and customization, this could be a good source for ideas.

If you really want to see what this book looks like, watch the video review by Parka. He opens the book and flips through it. That video sold me on the book instantly. I love mech and this book satisfied me.

James M. Van Verth is a software engineer at Google, where he works on GPU support for the Skia 2D Graphics Library. He has worked for Insomniac Games, NVIDIA, and Red Storm Entertainment and, for the past 17 years, he has been a regular speaker at GDC, teaching the tutorials "Math for Game Programmers" and "Physics for Game Programmers." He received a BA in math/computer science from Dartmouth College, an MS in computer science from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an MS in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lars M. Bishop is an engineer in the Handheld Developer Technologies group at NVIDIA. Prior to joining NVIDIA, he was the chief technology officer at Numerical Design Limited, leading the development of the Gamebryo3D cross-platform game engine. Essential Mathematics for Games and Interactive Applications by James M. Van Verth and Lars M. Bishop is a quality math book if I ever saw one. Strangely, the first edition came out in 2004 but the book was kind of off my radar until recently. This third edition was published in 2015 and seems very current. The authors here do a great job of explaining the material properly. I felt like they created a great foundation for learning these complex ideas and I appreciated the quality and readability of the code samples.The book starts with an overview of computer number representations, and goes into detail with the IEEE 754 floating-point standard. At first I assumed this was unnecessary detail, but actually it’s pretty useful to understand and a good base to build on. They continue with vectors and points, linear transformations and matrices, affine transformations, orientation (including matrices, Euler angles, axis-angle, and quaternions), and interpolation (linear and curved). In the next section they transition to more graphic oriented topics such as: viewing and projection, geometry and programmable shading, lighting, rasterization, then a random chapter on… random numbers, and finish off with intersection testing and rigid-body dynamics.Just looking at the table of contents is sometimes not enough to get a feel for the quality of the text, so I will reveal more. The beginning parts are really exactly what you’d expect for a game math book. The basics of vectors, matrices, quaternions, etc. are the bread and butter for a 3D programmer. The coverage here is solid and great for a beginner. Advanced readers may not find any surprises, but it’s still a good refresher. The interpolation chapter I found interesting, especially the detail into different types of curves and splines . This could be immediately useful for coding a skinned character or animating a camera in a game. Viewing and projection were given adequate coverage and are essential to anyone wishing to code a graphics engine themselves. The next chapter was particularly long and explained the programmable shader pipeline to great effect. The authors explained everything from color representation, vertex attributes, drawing geometry, fixed-function versus programmable, vertex and fragment shaders (aka pixel shaders), and texture mapping. Really a great introduction for anyone wanting to learn to code shaders themselves. Then they move onto lighting and go into the basic types (point, spot, directional, and ambient), surface materials, per-vertex and per-fragment lighting, combining with textures, and a few small sections of more advanced topics like normal mapping, physically based lighting, HDR, and deferred shading.Next up is rasterization, which was an awesome chapter that explained (in epic detail) how rasterizers work which I feel does help when you know what’s going on behind the scenes. I don’t know of many other books that explain this part of the pipeline so well, so this was much appreciated. The random number chapter was also quite informative. It’s easy to just call a function that spits out a number and not actually understand what’s happening. I found this portion of the book to be a nice surprise. Intersection testing was covered near the end, and it was one of the longer chapters. Almost anything you could think of was here: finding distances from lines and points, sphere/ray/plane intersections, axis-aligned bounding boxes (AABBs), swept spheres, object-oriented boxes, triangle intersection, and a simple collision system. Finally the book closes with a chapter on rigid-body dynamics. I actually purchased my copy mostly for the rigid-body material and I felt I learned a few useful things. Of course, it was only one chapter but some of the explanation was better than whole books I’ve read on physics. Certainly it gave me a few things to research further, and I appreciate that.Overall I would say that Essential Mathematics for Games and Interactive Applications is an almost flawless textbook. I may be a great place to start for a beginner, and even intermediate to advanced readers may learn a thing or two. Some of the other game math books I recommend I read so long ago it’s hard to make a direct comparison. But this title is certainly up there with the best. I would wholeheartedly recommend.

This book is an extensive guide to the essential elements of any game engine.I spent a few months working through this tome on nights and weekends this past fall, 2016. I've had a number of months now to let the book sink in.If you're like me and don't have much of a formal math background, you'll definitely find much of the book challenging. I took not-infrequent breaks to deep-dive into a subject outside of the book (I ended up needing to learn the basics of calculus at the start of the Interpolation chapter, for example). But that's the real strength of the book -- it shows you what you ought to know. It says that these certain areas are important, and these other things are not. It ended up being an excellent starting point for a deeper understanding of the various subjects that are important when programming games.What prompted me to pick up this book was a month or so wasted working through a number of Khan Academy videos on linear algebra. I found myself lost in the weeds of arcane math, without any grounding at all in actual application of that math. (Most of those videos are useless to a practical-minded game designer, and it's extremely difficult to know what's useful and what isn't.) This book is absolutely not theoretical -- it is grounded in the practical. You will not waste your time.At first I thought that this book would only really be helpful if I wanted to write my own game engine from scratch -- which is what I worked on while I was working through the book. But recently I've been getting back into Unity, and finding myself drawing upon basically every aspect of the book -- transformations, interpolation, geometry and shading, etc. It's helped make Unity feel much, much less complex -- I find myself being able to imagine precisely what's happening under the hood, and that's helped me not just write better scripts, but also just query the API documentation more efficiently. Finally, I feel like I know what I'm doing.The author of the book, James Van Verth, has done an excellent job not just with this text, but also with the community -- I had a number of questions about the text, and he was totally willing to answer my questions on Twitter. I was even able to discover a few small errors in the text, which he included in an Errata available on the website, which I'd recommend to any readers.

I think people like me, that always want to know 100% how things work, this book will be very useful, indeed. Moreover, I'm actually not very good in math, but this book got everything explained in a way, that even human with not very keen math knowledge can understand what is going on (and improve this knowledge, of-course).The only downside is print quality. It's not bad, but It could be better.

Delivers on the title perfectly. I found the explanations to be very straight forwards, and I like that it's separate from any particular framework or technology. I definitely feel like I have a stronger grasp on the subject after reading this book. I think the author did an amazing job in distilling the concepts down to their core.

coverage is comprehensive, but a little quick. explanations are brief, linear algebra component assumes a lot of preknowledge. if you want to. learn this you will need a different book

The book has a lot of details with examples. But I don't know there are something missing in it??!!!

I did not finish yet but I haven't got bored either. It is very readable and understandable so far. I wish there were some(not many :)) practice exercises.

This is a great book if your looking for some light reading. I learned about it through the soundtracks of the play on YouTube and learned it was a book since I'm not in a place plays often happen I chose this option which I feel holds attention and detail better from what I've heard if the play. This story will have you both rooting for the character, hating him for his voices, and then loving him all over again. It explains how hard it is to be a teenager in a society so filled with judgement and anxiety and fears holding you back and what some will do to over come that.

If you're coming from the musical, this book is absolutely nothing like it. The musical took a premise that was good but executed poorly and made it great. Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini isn't worth your time. The characters are skeevy and one-note. Nothing about them stands out in the slightest. The book only gets mildly interesting in the 'post-squip' sections, which is roughly halfway through the book. I recommend starting there, as anything before it is inconsequential and worthless.

The late Ned Vizzini did an AMAZING job at this work of art. I can't even fathom the amount of love and appreciation I have for it. When I finished it, I was heartbroken that it was my last time ever getting to read one of Ned's books for the first time. He will forever be missed.

From the 11-year-old reader: What do you do when you have a machine inside you? Jeremy tries to fix his teen life, which works for awhile, then gets out of hand. This book is full of teen spirit. Most of the characters are likeable. I recommend this book if you're looking for a little craziness in your life.

As someone who has fallen in love with the musical... this book really showed more to the story. I can't say much since it has been a while since I end it but I did enjoy this book a lot and it is now one of my favorites.

Great novel for teens who are going through something or think they need to be popular or adored by everyone, it does have strong language and mature content so be prepared, but aside from that I think the book has a really good message and that really showcases in the end.

The late Ned Vizzlini is becoming my favorite author. I picked this book up after my ongoing obsession with the musical. This book is every bit as engaging as that show, although the plot can differ greatly at times. It isnt an exact match of the show and it does not have to be. Recommended.
