Agile and "Science" are the anthesis of each other. Science is a commitment to rationalism. Agile is a word unintelligent people use when trying to appear intelligent to other unintelligent people.So to set the record straight, I read this book cover-to-cover (unusual for me). I found it to be practical, well organized, insightful at times and overall a good introduction to the topic of Data Science.I would like to clear up something not about this book but about our entire culture-- that always wants something for nothing. You will NOT be generating deep insights about your business effortlessly or quickly. By definition, these things are difficult and time-consuming.So buy this book and get started.

This book attempts to introduce a new methodology for analytics product development. And within this scope, I feel that the book accomplishes it's stated goal. Although somewhat lengthy, the flow of information within this book stays focused on the critical path to the end product while covering documentation, facilitation, exploration, and discovery. A reappearing theme of aligning data science with the rest of the organization is present throughout.After the obligatory introductory chapters, the book introduces a suite of tools used for the remaining chapters. These include Jupyter Notebooks, Python 3, Spark, sci-kit learn, and lightweight web applications. The data it introduces is the OpenFlights Database that is freely available from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics followed by weather datasets available from NOAA. The first goal is to use the tools and the data to predict flight delays.With this setup, the book continues with detailed studies of collecting and displaying records, visualizing data, exploration of data, making predictions, deploying predictive systems, and improvements. I appreciated how the book followed the same datasets throughout as it moved through all the stages it's proposed methodology. Overall, a solid addition to the data science library.

At the outset, author Russell Jurney describes his intended audience: “Agile Data Science is intended to help beginners and budding data scientists to become productive members of data science and analytics teams. It aims to help engineers, analysts, and data scientists work wth big data in an agile way using Hadoop. It introduces an agile methodology well-suited for big data”. In my opinion, he achieves all of his goals. As a computer forensics specialist, I always deal with data. What has changed in the past two decades is the scale of the data I have to analyze. We’ve come a long way from analyzing a few megabytes of data. Now, the possibility exists that I may have to deal with petabytes of data to find what I am looking for – or confirm its absence. To that extent I have to deal with people who tell me things can’t be done, usually within an adversarial relationship. What this book does for me in a big way is clarifying the process of getting from here to there. Jurney describes the process clearly and in great deal. While I am not exactly the intended audience, I think those who are will benefit greatly from this book.Jerry

I am reviewing a copy of "Agile Data Science 2.0" by Russell Jurney that I received at no cost through the Amazon Vine program.Working in a data science group in I.T., we've had a lot of conversations about how I.T. operating approaches - agile, devOps, PMO - apply to data science. Data Science tasks are different in that not all work is intended to lead to functioning software, as well as the strongly-iterative approach that is necessary to deliver results to stakeholders in a way that discrete units of software might not otherwise be reviewed.Russell Jurney's "Agile Data Science 2.0" goes a long way in moving that conversation in the right direction. I had three target audiences in mind when I acquired this book. The first was our PM, who had worked in I.T. for years as a director and project manager but continued to try to wrap his head around the data science process. The second was a director who was new to the data science process and wanted a better grasp of how to communicate expectations to the team. The third was myself, having spent time in both IT and in research, I had seen the two worlds and wanted a way to help explain how the two mesh.Jurney has offered, as have many data science books, a suggested stack and how to implement it, but the most valuable part of the book I thought was the first two chapters for their emphasis on the agile manifesto for data science, a description of the many roles that go into a team, and highlights of how agile can make for better data science both in terms of research and in terms of products.This is not a text to learn Spark from a developer's perspective but rather to understand how spark can fit in. Spark isn't the only platform, so those using Dask or other tools will still find value here.If the book has a weakness it's the focus on developing a web portal to expose the data science product; this isn't a bad way to do things, not at all, but it's not where our work is going at the moment, so this limits the applicability of some of the chapters. But there's nothing that keeps the book from being useful .. so much so that I honestly don't know whose desk it's sitting on at the moment, since as soon as our PM finished it he gave it to a BA, who gave it to another PM...

This is a unique book and a vital one if you are interested in terrorist groups. The book has a short chapter on each group, providing a paragraph or two on the background and history of the group, a timeline, a high-quality line drawing of the group's logo with color definitions and the full-color logo. It goes further, explaining the symbology behind the logo.These logos are important to each group's self-identity, as well as to the identity the group wishes to broadcast to its friends and enemies. It includes a wide range of active groups, from al-Qaeda to the Red Brigades. It does not include ALL the groups, as not all of them have branding and there is some disagreement as to whether other groups are terror groups. The book includes a list of terror groups, including those not featured. A very handy book to have. Also, a unique study of this particular kind of branding.

I bought this because I like to seed my bookshelf with some talking pieces. Little did I know that this book is ABSURDLY well researched. Like... whomever put this together is probably on some watch lists now. This is actually a bizarre and off center perspective on a topical issue in contemporary politics.

In the three-page Foreword, he briefly covers the purpose of logos in general, the grounds for critiquing the logos of the groups whose logos appear in the book (e. g., cliche, too many guns or eagles), and compares the logos to those of the Catholic Church, Coca-Cola, Apple, and other major established cultural presences.Logotypes and iconography are intended not only as a means of communication--often in the simple terms of "sending a message"--and identity in the public and international sphere, but also as a means of internal, often secret or guarded identification, focus, and cohesion for members of a particular group.Artur Beifuss is a counter-terrorist analyst for the United Nations. Francesco Bellini is a graphic designer involved in branding for companies and institutions. In Beifuss's Introduction, he notes the logos as a way of branding for a group. Beifuss also notes the book's purpose to help understand by a survey of the 64 logos collected mostly from open sources such as websites "why certain visual elements are preferred over others [and the] certain meanings, emotions, and values" attached to such elements.The schema used for accomplishing the book's purpose is the same for each "logo". Under the heading of the respective group is its name in the script of its national language (many in Arabic) followed by the translation or approximation in English. Underneath this is a brief overview of the group, and underneath this a chronology of it major terrorist acts. The second page is a plain, black-and-white, drawing of the group's logotype with lines to notes pointing out its features above a chart breaking down the colors and associated pantone coding for each. The last, third, page is a full-color picture of the logotype with explanations of the meaning of its colors, elements, and symbols.The book would be used by most as a reference to find out more about Middle East and other terrorist groups defined as groups using violence for political or ideological aims when specific or related groups were mentioned in the media, for example. Since many of the groups are similar, the details of each start to run together when used as a study text. However one regards this work, it has a distinctive, notable, self-evidently relevant and useful place in contemporary studies of the global terrorism.

The authors... produced a beautiful but biased reference guide for members of the intelligence and law enforcement communities. .... The book's [has] 60 beautifully illustrated emblems, accompanied by a symbolic analysis and description of each group's ideology,...." In Mr. Perlmutter's review, he contends that "Branding Terror", by presenting short bios of the various groups, really fails to reveal the "ugly realities of what these symbols represent." Rather than detailing the various shortcomings that Mr. Perlmutter bemoans in each group's bio, I urge you to read his extensive online review. I'm not trying to pontificate who is "right or wrong" in the Arab-Israeli Conflict, but as a student interested in understanding graphic symbolism, I believe that Mr. Perlmutter's critique adds informative analysis of the symbolic meanings to the Palestinian logos. Just to add a little more "color" to Mr. Perlmutter's commentaries, here are a few more of his thoughts: "The book "Branding Terror" essentially sugarcoats the jihadist threat by applying a biased interpretation of the emblems, minimizing the iconography of martyrdom and sanitizing obvious violent indicators, such as the black flags of jihad and swords that are depicted in many of the Islamist logos.... There is no reference at all to the swords' significance in representing "the sword verses" in the Quran, which jihadists use to justify their violence or that they represents Jihad by the sword (jihad bis saif), which refers to armed fighting in holy war." Essentially, Mr. Perlmutter is rather miffed that the authors should have done more in explaining the theological symbolism of some of the logos, more than opining merely that a logo's red stars may represent a communist group.

The Fifty Shades of Grey tide got my interest and I bought the entire trilogy. I can understand what captured the imagination of the many buyers, but, in my opinion, the story was overwritten and, as we now know, a derivative from the Twilight (Stephanie Meyer) saga. I'm happy for E. L. James, the phenomenal sales and, what's more important, the dialog it created. I know the titillation value attracted many buyers, but the story is not really that complex, almost didactic in scope.

Last night, I finished reading Edge Play X by M. Jarrett Wilson. Take Fifty Shades and ratchet it up a few notches, add better vocabulary, more complex characters and a story requiring you to think, and you'll get closer to Edge Play X.

Edge Play X also uses BDSM as a device, but here it's much more part of the story. The central character, X, a Dominatrix, is also an artist, but 'allows' herself to be hired out by those wishing to role play a submissive. We meet her as she's being kidnapped by a CIA agent, who asks her to set up a multi-billionaire for possible blackmail.

While it seems the main theme breathes as class wars: authority figures, the extreme rich and recognition, there are other forces working behind the scenes which wrap the above within its confine.
Edge Play X is a much more cogent book than what you may expect and it takes the reader on an intelligent journey, one requiring the reader to think and not be passive.
